A garage door opener installation in Vancouver usually costs $550–$1,100 with a standard chain or belt opener, and takes 2 to 3 hours. Wall-mount (jackshaft) units and battery backup cost more. Before the new opener goes on, we balance and check the door. That matters on older single doors in lane garages around Kitsilano, Point Grey and Hastings-Sunrise, where a dragging door would wear out a new opener quickly.
- We balance and check the door before mounting the opener
- Belt drives suit laneway homes and suites with rooms beside the garage
Choosing an opener for a Vancouver garage
Chain drive. Durable and the lowest cost, but louder. Fine for a detached garage off the lane where nobody sleeps nearby.
Belt drive. Much quieter. Worth it when a laneway house, a basement suite or a bedroom shares a wall or ceiling with the garage, which is common on 33-foot lots.
Wall-mount (jackshaft). Mounts beside the door and turns the torsion bar directly, leaving the ceiling clear. It needs a torsion spring system and suits garages with storage racks overhead.
A 1/2 HP or equivalent DC opener handles most single and double doors. Heavy wood doors may need more.

Old lane garages: the door comes first
Many detached garages off Vancouver lanes are older single-car buildings, often with original doors. A new opener won't fix a door that is hard to lift. If the springs are tired or the rollers are worn, the opener strains from the first day.
So before install, we release the door and lift it by hand. It should move smoothly and stay put halfway up. If it doesn't, we'll quote the spring or roller work alongside the opener. We'd rather tell you up front than install an opener that fails early.
Install day in Vancouver
The opener needs a grounded outlet near where it mounts. Older garages often don't have one, so an electrician should add it before we arrive. Tight lane access can make staging harder, so tell us where to park.
We remove the old opener, mount the new one, set the travel limits and close force, align the safety sensors and test the reverse. New remotes usually come with the opener. Your old ones generally won't work unless the new unit is the same brand and signal system. We pair your remotes, keypad and car buttons before we leave.
What we see in Vancouver
- Detached garages off the lane are often older single-car buildings with original doors that need balancing before a new opener goes on.
- New garages built with laneway houses in Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and Renfrew-Collingwood often sit beside living space, so a quiet belt drive is a good fit.
- Basement suites and laneway homes on 33-foot lots mean opener noise reaches neighbours and tenants easily.
- Tight lane access can make install day slower to stage, so tell us about parking.
- We also install openers in North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond.

Questions homeowners ask
Chain or belt for a garage beside a laneway house?
Belt. Chain drives are durable and cheaper but louder. A belt drive is much quieter, which matters when living space is next to or above the garage.
Does my old lane garage need an outlet added?
The opener needs a grounded outlet near where it mounts. Many older garages lack one, so have an electrician add it before install day.
What does opener installation cost in Vancouver?
Most installs run $550–$1,100 including a standard chain or belt opener. Wall-mount openers and battery backup units cost more.
Can I keep my old remotes?
Usually not, unless the new opener is the same brand and signal system. New remotes typically come with the opener.
Will a new opener fix a door that's hard to lift?
No. The springs carry the weight, not the opener. We check balance first and quote any spring work so the new opener isn't overloaded.
