Opener Installation for West Vancouver Garages
Many West Vancouver homeowners want a quiet belt drive or a wall-mount opener that leaves the ceiling clear. We balance the door first, then fit an opener strong enough for it.
- Standard chain or belt opener installed: $550–$1,100
- Wall-mount and battery backup units cost more
- A standard install takes 2 to 3 hours

Garage door opener installation in West Vancouver usually runs $550–$1,100 with a standard chain or belt opener, and takes 2 to 3 hours. Wall-mount jackshaft openers and battery backup units cost more. Heavy custom wood or glass doors in the British Properties and Altamont often need a stronger unit, and we check door balance before mounting anything, since a new opener won't fix a hard-to-lift door.
- Heavy custom doors may need more power than a 1/2 HP unit
- The old opener is removed and taken away
Wall-mount and belt openers: what most homes here ask for
Two requests come up again and again in West Vancouver. The first is quiet. Belt drives run far quieter than chain drives, which matters when a bedroom or living space sits over or beside the garage, as it does in many split-level and rebuilt homes in Dundarave and Ambleside.
The second is a clear ceiling. A wall-mount (jackshaft) opener sits beside the door and turns the torsion bar directly. It suits high ceilings, storage racks and garages where a ceiling rail would get in the way. It needs a torsion spring system, which most newer doors have.
Chain drives still make sense for a detached garage where noise doesn't matter. They're durable and cost less.

Sizing the opener for a heavy door
A 1/2 HP or equivalent DC opener handles most single and double doors. Many West Vancouver houses, especially in the British Properties, Altamont and Caulfeild, have heavy custom doors in solid wood or glass. Those may call for a stronger unit.
Power is only half of it. Before the opener goes on we check that the door is balanced and that the springs suit its weight. An opener bolted to a heavy, badly balanced door wears out early. If the springs are tired, we'll say so and quote them separately.
Snow in the upper British Properties during colder winters adds strain too, so a well-balanced door and a properly set close force matter more up the hill.
What happens on install day
We remove the old opener, mount and wire the new one, set the travel limits and close force, line up the safety sensors and test the reverse. New remotes typically come with the opener. Old remotes usually won't pair unless the new opener is the same brand and signal system.
The opener needs a grounded outlet near where it mounts. If there isn't one, have an electrician add it before we arrive. Battery backup is worth considering if your street loses power in winter storms. Smart phone control can be added at the same time.

Questions homeowners ask
What does a new opener cost installed?
Most installs run $550–$1,100 including a standard chain or belt opener. Wall-mount jackshaft openers and units with battery backup cost more.
Is a wall-mount opener a good fit for my garage?
If your door uses torsion springs and you want the ceiling clear for storage or have a high ceiling, yes. It mounts beside the door and turns the torsion bar directly.
We have a bedroom over the garage. Chain or belt?
Belt. Belt drives are much quieter than chain drives. Chain drives cost less and last well, but you'll hear them through the floor.
How much horsepower does a large custom door need?
A 1/2 HP or equivalent DC opener covers most residential doors. Heavy wood or glass doors may need a stronger unit, and we confirm the springs suit the door's weight first.
Will our current remotes still work?
Usually not, unless the new opener is the same brand and signal system. New remotes typically come with the opener.
Does the garage need a ceiling outlet?
It needs a grounded outlet near where the opener mounts. For a wall-mount unit that's beside the door. If there isn't one, an electrician should add it before install day.
