North Vancouver Garage Door Opener Installation

Older wood doors, wet garages and snow on the upper slopes. In North Vancouver we fit openers that suit those conditions and check the door before we start.

  • Typical North Vancouver install: $550–$1,100 including a chain or belt opener
  • Most installs take 2 to 3 hours
  • Heavy wood doors on post-and-beam homes may need a stronger opener
The short answer

Installing a new garage door opener in North Vancouver usually costs $550–$1,100 with a standard chain or belt unit and takes 2 to 3 hours. Wall-mount openers and battery backup cost more. Many post-and-beam homes in Edgemont, Capilano and Lynn Valley have older wood doors that may need a stronger opener, and damp garages under heavy tree cover mean we check tracks and rollers for rust first.

  • Rusty tracks and rollers should be dealt with before a new opener goes on
  • Battery backup helps when winter storms cut power on the upper slopes

Older wood doors on post-and-beam homes

Much of the district is 1950s to 1970s post-and-beam houses and split-levels, and many still have older wood garage doors. Wood doors are heavy, and in North Vancouver's wet months they can swell. A 1/2 HP or equivalent DC opener handles most doors, but a heavy wood door may call for a stronger unit.

More important is the balance. A new opener won't fix a door that is hard to lift. Before installing, we release the door, lift it by hand and check that it holds halfway. If it drops or binds, we quote the spring or hardware work first.

Wet garages, rust and snow

Heavy rain and tree cover keep many North Shore garages damp, and rollers and tracks rust faster. A new opener pulling a door through rusty track wears out early. We check the track, rollers and hinges and tell you what needs replacing.

Upper neighbourhoods like Lynn Valley, Blueridge and Canyon Heights get snow and frost more often. Doors stiffen and seals can freeze to the floor. We set the close force so the opener reverses rather than fighting a stuck door. Battery backup is worth adding if storms knock out power on your street.

Steep driveways, outlets and choosing a drive

Steep driveways often mean a sloped garage floor where the door doesn't seal evenly. We set the travel limit for your floor and level the safety sensors.

A chain drive is durable and cheaper but louder. A belt drive is much quieter, useful in split-levels with rooms over the garage. A wall-mount opener clears the ceiling and needs torsion springs. You'll need a grounded outlet near where the opener mounts. New remotes normally come with the opener, and we pair them before leaving.

FAQ

Questions homeowners ask

Will a standard opener lift my old wood door?

A 1/2 HP or equivalent DC opener handles most doors if the springs are balanced. Heavy wood doors may call for a stronger unit.

Do I need to fix rusty tracks before a new opener?

It's a good idea. Rusty tracks and rollers add drag and shorten the new opener's life. We check them and quote what's needed.

Is battery backup worth it in North Vancouver?

If your street loses power in winter storms, yes. It lets you open and close the door during an outage.

What does opener installation cost?

Most installs run $550–$1,100 including a standard chain or belt opener. Wall-mount and battery backup units cost more.

Will my old remotes work with the new opener?

Usually not, unless it's the same brand and signal system. New remotes typically come with the opener.
