Garage door spring replacement in New Westminster typically costs $350–$600 for a torsion pair on a standard double door, including parts and labour, and extension spring jobs are often in a similar range. Most take about 1 to 2 hours. In Queen's Park and Sapperton, old single-car doors with extension springs are a common call, especially in cold snaps. Queensborough's newer doors use torsion springs.
- Extension springs need safety cables and good pulleys, which we check
- Steep lots and tight lanes affect how we access the garage
Old extension springs in the city's oldest garages
Queen's Park and Sapperton have Victorian and Edwardian homes on steep, narrow lots, and many still have original single-car garages. A lot of those doors use extension springs, which run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes.
Old extension springs wear out and fail more often in cold snaps. When one breaks, it can whip and damage what's nearby. We replace worn springs in pairs, check the pulleys and cables, and make sure a safety cable runs through each spring to contain it if it ever breaks again.

Signs of a broken spring
A bang. Often the first sign, especially on a cold morning.
A heavy door. The door won't lift, or lifts crooked with one side first.
A visible gap. On torsion systems, a gap in the coil on the bar above the door. On extension systems, a stretched or snapped spring along the track.
Loose cables. Cables hanging off the drums or pulleys.
A straining opener. It lifts the door only a few inches.
If you see any of these, stop using the opener and don't lift the door by hand.
Access, Queensborough and newer doors
Steep lots and tight lane access in Brow of the Hill and the West End can make door work harder to stage, so tell us about access when you book. Damp weather wears wood doors and frames, and a door that drags adds stress to its springs.
In Queensborough, newer homes and townhouses mostly have modern doors with torsion springs above the door. We replace both springs on a two-spring door in most cases, set the tension, and balance the door so it holds halfway. Standard springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles; higher-cycle springs last longer.

Questions homeowners ask
What are extension springs, and do I have them?
Extension springs run along the side tracks and stretch as the door closes. Torsion springs sit on a bar above the door and twist. Many older garages here use extension springs.
Why did my old spring break in the cold?
Springs wear out after a set number of cycles, and cold makes the steel more brittle. Old springs often fail during a cold snap.
How much does spring replacement cost in New Westminster?
Most torsion spring pairs on a standard double door run $350–$600 including parts and labour. Extension spring jobs are often in a similar range.
Should I replace both springs?
If the door has two, yes in most cases. They've done the same number of cycles, so the second is usually close to failing.
Is spring replacement a DIY job?
No. Springs hold a lot of stored energy, and torsion springs can cause serious injury if a winding bar slips.
