Garage door opener installation in Surrey typically costs $550–$1,100 with a standard chain or belt opener and takes 2 to 3 hours. Most of our Surrey installs replace original openers on 1980s and 1990s homes in Newton and Fleetwood, where parts are getting hard to find. Summer is our busiest time for upgrades. Wall-mount openers and battery backup cost more than a standard unit.
- Battery backup is worth considering if the garage is your main entry
- Townhouse stratas in Clayton and Grandview may set rules on opener types
Replacing a first-generation opener in Newton or Fleetwood
When the opener in a 1980s split-level keeps breaking and the parts are hard to find, replacement usually beats another repair. Openers that old may also predate safety reversing sensors.
We start by checking the door. It should lift smoothly by hand and stay halfway up. Doors from that era often have tired springs, and a new opener won't fix a door that's hard to lift. If the springs need work, we quote it with the install. Then we take down the old unit, mount the new one, set limits and force, align the sensors and test the reverse.

Which opener suits a busy Surrey garage
Many Surrey families use the garage as the main way in and out, so the opener runs many times a day.
- Chain drive: tough and lower cost, but louder.
- Belt drive: much quieter, a good pick if a suite or bedroom is next to the garage.
- Wall-mount: frees the ceiling for storage racks, needs a torsion spring system.
- Battery backup: keeps the door working in a power outage, useful when the garage is how everyone gets in.
- Phone control: many new openers can be opened and checked from an app.
A 1/2 HP or equivalent DC unit handles most doors.
Strata townhouses and planning ahead
Large townhouse complexes in Clayton and Grandview often have strata rules that limit door colour and opener types. Check with your council before booking, and we can give you the model details they ask for.
The opener needs a grounded outlet near the mounting spot. If there isn't one, have an electrician add it first. New remotes usually come with the opener, and old remotes only carry over when the brand and signal system match. Summer fills up with opener upgrades, so book a little ahead if you can.

Questions homeowners ask
How much is a new opener installed in Surrey?
Most installs run $550–$1,100 including a standard chain or belt opener. Wall-mount units and battery backup cost more.
What horsepower opener do I need?
A 1/2 HP or equivalent DC opener handles most single and double doors. Heavy wood or insulated doors may need a stronger unit.
Is battery backup worth it?
If the garage is your family's main entry, it's worth thinking about. It lets the door open and close during a power outage.
Do I need strata approval in my Clayton townhouse?
Often yes. Many complexes set rules on opener types and door colour. Check with your council before the install.
Will my current remotes work with the new opener?
Usually not, unless it's the same brand and signal system. New remotes typically come with the opener and we pair them on install day.
